The Beginning

As most of you know, I will be leaving to spend a year in Costa Rica teaching English through a volunteer program called WorldTeach. I am starting this blog mainly so I do not have to worry about remembering to e-mail everyone. I am hoping this will be a great way to keep in touch with everyone back in the good ol' US of A and share what I am doing down in CR.

So, a little about my placement:
I will be living in a town on the Pacific Coast of CR called Manuel Antonio. This town has about 1000 people living in it and has gone through a big tourist boom in the past few years. Since tourism is the main source of income for the Ticos (Costa Ricans) in this area, it is extremely important that they know how to speak English. I will be teaching at the bilingual school (first bilingual school in CR!) along with another volunteer and two Tico teachers. I will definitely be teaching English and may be teaching science and/or PE as well.

I will be living with a single mom (Rocio) and her three children. Jenny will be turning 15 during my stay there (which is a HUGE deal), Louis is 13 and Rebecca is 8. I will most likely have Rebecca in one of my classes. I am really excited to meet my new familia and can't wait to start meeting everyone in the town!

My plane leaves on Jan. 7th at 8:40 am. I will be flying to Miami first where I will meet with the other volunteers. Our plane leaves Miami at 7:40 pm and will arrive in CR at 9:40 pm. Until then...paz.

  5. Cool, you already had your first drama with the pics and cold shower...you are awesome...here is what you are missing in the US: the porn industry wants a bailout now, Ashely and Pete finally introduced their baby to the world, and I told my students yesterday that you were moving to CR and they replied...oh. I think they have no idea where that is....help? I am stuck in the elevator? All in 1 day!! Muah!

  6. And now an earthquake with maaaaany aftershocks! OMG. SO, Megan had a dream last night that your first story from CR was that you met a guy in a liquor store and started making out with him and them she, Pat, Scoot, and I were arguing about whether we should be worried or not! Is this true? How is everything? We can't wait for some pics and stories :)

  7. Lizzie:

When Costa Rica heard you were coming, it got all "shook up" and gave you a welcoming earthquake!

Good luck in all your endeavors, you will be a wonderful role model to your kids there.
    Love, Granma

  10. I excited to spend a year following you in CR. I thought it was bad when Jenni was gone for 2 months in Spain! Your mom and dad survived Elz and Pat in Thailand, so I guess you could call them 'seasoned' parents.

I hope someday you get a warm shower.

    Much love from Tucson.
